Recently I have been into trying different variations of homemade apple cider vinegar drinks and the occasional kombucha (fermented black tea) in hopes to improve my digestion and reduce bloating and I can say I have found my favourite variation of a homemade drink!
So here it is..
Using a 32 oz mason jar (I like using mason jars because you can shake it once everything has been put in)
32oz cold water
1.5 Tbsp Chia Seeds
1-2 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother)
Juice of 1/3 – 1/2 a lemon
1 Tbs Ribena- Black Current Concentrate (optional)
- let drink sit in he fridge for 5 minutes or so just to allow the chia seeds to gel
So why choose these ingredients?
Chia seeds are great for digestion because as they come in contact with a liquid they become gelatinous. Once the chia seeds enter the stomach in this gelatinous state they begin to act as a prebiotic, promoting growth of beneficial microorganisms that help support probiotics of the gut and small intestines. Chia seeds also are high in fibre which helps to promote bowel regularity and the feeling of fullness.
Apple Cider Vinegar (containing the mother)- Choosing an apple cider vinegar containing the mother is a key component to this drink being successful. The mother is a beneficial colony of bacteria that acts again as a prebiotic to the probiotics of the gut. Using apple cider vinegar with the mother has anti-inflammatory effects, alkalizing pH, and can help maintain a consistent blood glucose level.
Lemon Juice– Because the juices of the stomach are so similar to that of lemon juice, lemon tricks the liver into creating bile which helps you to keep things moving through the GI tract. Again, enhancing nutrient absorption allows for better digestion and less bloating.
Ribena– Simply to add some sweetness but is unnecessary.
